Only 30% of small business owners would recommend their current SEO provider to a friend or colleague.
That is according to a 2026 Backlinko survey of 1,200 business owners, and if you have ever hired an SEO company and felt like you were paying for a black box, it will not surprise you.
I am Vicki, and I run Insight Digital Co from Jannali. SEO is most of what I sell, so I have an obvious interest in you choosing me.
But I would rather you pick the right provider with your eyes open than sign with anyone, including me, off the back of a good pitch.
So here is what an SEO company should actually do, what it costs in the SEO company in the Shire, the questions worth asking before you sign, and the red flags that should make you walk away.

What Should an SEO Company Actually Do For You?
An SEO company should get your business in front of people who are already searching for what you sell, and prove it with numbers you can check yourself.
For a Sutherland Shire service business, that work generally covers five areas. Technical foundations, so Google can crawl and index your site properly and it loads fast.
On-page optimisation, so your pages target the searches your customers actually make, like “hot water repairs Caringbah” rather than a generic service name. Content that answers the questions your customers ask before they buy, which also matters more each month for showing up in AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT.
Local signals, including your Google Business Profile, reviews and citations, since the map pack often drives more calls than the standard results. And plain-English reporting on leads and enquiries, not just rankings, with direct access to your own Google Analytics and Search Console.
If a provider cannot explain their work in those terms, or their reporting stops at “rankings improved,” keep looking.
How Much Does SEO Cost in the Sutherland Shire?
Pricing varies, but most local service businesses pay somewhere between $500 and $3,000 a month for SEO, depending on how competitive their market is and how much content and technical work is needed.
My own packages start from $575 a month. I publish that figure because I think hiding pricing behind a contact form wastes everyone’s time, and it is worth knowing what a genuine local provider charges before you take a call with anyone.
One thing worth understanding about the price and the timeline together: SEO is a long game. Anyone promising page one rankings within a month is either overpromising or using tactics that risk getting your site penalised down the track. Whatever you spend, budget for at least three to six months before you judge the results.
Five Questions to Ask Before You Sign
Ask these and listen for specifics. A good provider answers all of them without hesitating.
Who actually does the work? The honest answer names a real person. At bigger agencies, the person who pitches you is often not the person doing the work, and some of it may be outsourced. Neither is automatically a problem, but you deserve to know before you sign.
What happens in the first 90 days? The honest answer is specific, covering a technical audit, keyword research mapped to your services and suburbs, fixes to existing pages and Google Business Profile work. Vague talk about “strategy” with no deliverables tends to stay vague for the life of the contract.
When will I see results? Three to six months for early movement, and six to twelve months for results that meaningfully change your enquiries, depending on your starting point and competition. Anyone quoting weeks is not being straight with you.
What do I own if we part ways? Everything, including your website, content, Google Analytics, Search Console and Google Business Profile, all registered in accounts you control. Some providers build client sites on platforms they control, so leaving means starting again.
How will you report, and what access do I get? A monthly, plain-English report plus permanent direct access to your own analytics, so you can check the numbers yourself rather than taking anyone’s word for it.
Red Flags to Watch For
The single biggest red flag is a guaranteed ranking. Nobody controls Google, so nobody can guarantee a position, and providers who promise one are either overpromising or planning shortcuts that risk getting your site penalised.
A few others worth walking away from. Lock-in contracts longer than the work requires, since a fair minimum term is three to six months, and anything much beyond that mostly protects the provider from having to perform.
No access to your own data, because if you cannot log into your own Analytics and Search Console, you cannot check whether anything you are being told is true. Pricing tied to a percentage of your ad spend, which rewards a provider for spending more of your money rather than getting you more customers.
And outsourced work that is never disclosed. Plenty of “local” agencies are a sales layer over an offshore team, and the issue is not where the work happens, it is not being told.
How Insight Digital Co Can Help
If you have read this far, you are probably weighing up whether to invest in SEO at all, or whether the provider in front of you is the right one. Either way, that is a good instinct to follow.
At Insight Digital Co, you work directly with me, not a rotating account manager. I keep my client roster small on purpose, so the attention stays focused rather than spread thin across dozens of accounts.
Every strategy starts with a clear plan built around your goals, not a generic checklist, and every report is written in plain English so you always know what is working and what is coming next. There are no lock-in contracts. You stay because the results speak for themselves, not because you are tied into an agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does SEO take to work in the Sutherland Shire? Most businesses see early movement within three to six months, with meaningful results on enquiries taking six to twelve months. Timing depends on your starting point, your market’s competitiveness and how much work your website needs.
Can an SEO company guarantee a number one ranking? No legitimate provider can guarantee a specific ranking, because nobody controls Google’s algorithm. Be wary of anyone who promises a position rather than a process.
Is it worth paying more for SEO, or is a cheaper provider just as good? Cheaper providers often mean templated reports and limited hands-on work. It is reasonable to expect that a genuinely tailored, local strategy costs more than a mass-produced package, though the right fit depends on your goals and budget.
Do I need a local SEO provider, or can any agency do this work? A local provider is not essential, but understanding the Sutherland Shire, the suburbs your customers search from and the local competition helps shape a more relevant strategy from day one.
What should I own if I stop working with my SEO provider? Everything: your website, your content, and accounts for your Google Analytics, Search Console and Google Business Profile, all registered to you rather than the agency.
